When another dog invades her space, she handles the situation by being aggressive.

My Australian Cattle Dog, which is a wonderful canine citizen and everything, has been having difficulty with other dogs because she is so dominant. She's obedient and amiable with human beings, but she's quite aggressive with other dogs. I've been having difficulties with her snapping at other dogs if they come near her while she's on a leash.

If I command her to stay still and the other dog to remain a normal distance away, everything is fine. She doesn't want other dogs encroaching her space or standing over her to sleep (she is quite small, so nearly all dogs position themselves above her). I can't correct her while on the muzzle because she realises that while muzzled, she is unable to show the other dog who is in charge. We have just begun therapy dog training classes, and she is doing extremely well.

In a therapy session, she's an ideal angel around other dogs. On and off leash, she won't entice other dogs to join her, making her an excellent choice for therapy. If any problem arose, I would not be comfortable with her snapping at another dog, but there are some issues that can't be prevented. Do you have any advice? I'm thinking about quitting her therapy dog classes.

The sigue is that you have to maintain a respectable distance between your dog and the other dogs. To do this, you must teach your dog that she can trust you and that you will keep other dogs away. You may correct her for her aggression, but you must also show her that you will not allow unfamiliar dogs from other packs to approach her and invade her personal space. Your job as a pack leader is to protect your pack, and you are not doing it by letting strangers wander in off the streets and approach your dog too close. A walking stick or stun gun may be used to deter strangers.
